“Most probably, Turkey’s demand will not be as strong as before the Eid holiday. Last week, during Turkey’s holiday, the sentiment has worsened in the global market with the slump in China and Turkey’s steel prices are now no more competitive in the global market due to high-priced scrap purchases. They should initially wish to gauge the situation in steel sales,” says a US trader.

In Turkey, market participants believe that US-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 price, which reached $408-410/t cfr before the Eid-holiday, is likely to fall below $400/t cfr levels in the short term as Baltic-origin HMS 1&2 80:20 prices have already decreased to $400-402/t cfr on the bookings disclosed in the market on Monday. Scrap demand has remained weak on the business day after a long holiday, while most market players expect it to remain unchanged throughout the week.

On the West Coast, the market situation is no brighter as buyers’ demand for scrap is quite weak amid the slump in the Chinese market, competitive Japanese offers and low steel sales. US-origin containerised HMS 1&2 80:20 offers at around $360-365/t cfr Taiwan do not seem acceptable for Taiwanese buyers on Monday.
